TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Toledo Mud Hens by a score of 4-1 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio on Monday night.
The win marks the first time the G-Braves have started a road trip with a victory. Erik Cordier (W, 1-1) was sensational for the Braves in earning his first victory of the season. With the win, the Gwinnett Braves (30-28) remained in second place in the International League South division.
Gwinnett started strong when, in the top of the first inning, Jose Constanza smacked a solo home run to right field. The G-Braves held onto the lead for the rest of the way.
Cordier pitched 7 shutout innings on his way to his first victory this season. He finished the day allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Steven Shell came in to relieve Cordier in the eighth inning, going 2/3 of an inning while allowing a run. Closer Jairo Asencio finished the ball game for the Braves and earned his seventh save of the season.
Constanza led the offense for the G-Braves on the night. He finished the game going 4-for-5, with a HR, 3B, and 2 RBI. Constanza was a double away from the cycle. 3B Shawn Bowman was the only other Brave to have a multi-hit night. He finished the night going 2-for-4 with a R. SS Julio Lugo had his first hit as a member of the Gwinnett Braves. Lugo finished the day going 1-for-5, with a R and a SB.
The G-Braves continue their four game series against the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
