Proposed transportation projects under the microscope

GAINESVILLE - Officials in a number of cities and counties across Georgia are continuing their work with the DOT in whittling down the list of transit projects that would be funded by a one percent sales tax.

Stephanie Harmon with the Gainesville-based Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC) tells Georgia News Network they're combing through a list of over a hundred projects.

"We have until October to complete that," Harmon said. "So, it's going to be a pretty lengthy process...based on the amount of projects we have to review. We have 151 to review."

Of the 151 projects, Forsyth County has the highest number (50), followed by Hall County with 24. (For a complete list of the projects in each county in the 13-county Georgia Mountains region, pleased click on the link below.)

Harmon added there may be some horse-trading going on before all is said and done.

"There may be a little bit of 'well, my community needs project on here if we are going to support it.' But we have yet to see if that is going to occur."

Voters will decide next year if they want to approve a penny sales tax to fund transit projects in their specific region of the state.
