Early Sunday May 29th in Houston, TX, police officer Kevin Will was working a traffic stop on the side of the highway when a drunk driver struck and killed him. Officer Will leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.<br />

This tragedy takes on a more sad note when one understands that the killer, Johoan Rodriguez is an illegal immigrant who had been deported twice, only to find his way back into the country.<br />
<br />
Police reported Rodriguez had .3 grams of cocaine in his pocket along with an alcohol level of .238. Municipal court records show Rodriguez had several prior contacts with Houston Police, dating to 2001. His misdemeanor record includes five violations in 2009 including driving without insurance and driving with an expired license plate.<br />
<br />
What is it that the people of Houston don't get? Officer Will is the sixth consecutive HPD officer to be shot or killed in the line of duty by an illegal immigrant.<br />
<br />
Maybe Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz should rethink her belief that "undocumented immigrants" are not criminals. The congresswoman is reported to have recently remarked that illegal aliens are "part of the backbone of our economy and not only a reality, but a necessity." I'm pretty sure that Officer Will's seven-month pregnant widow and his two children would disagree with Ms. Wasserman-Schultz's assessment. <br />

To make matters worse, President Obama doesn't seem to get the seriousness of the situation nor does he acknowledge the violence occurring on the U.S.-Mexico border. To compound the frustration, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano continues to tell Americans that the U.S.-Mexico border is secure and border towns are safe and "thriving." <br />

As you question the need for tough and fair immigration reform, remember that Rodriguez was deported twice before killing Officer Will, causing his wife to raise their children on her own without a father. Plus, in 2009 he had five additional violations. It doesn't seem fair that Rodriguez was charged a $10 dollar fine and given some short jail time for entering the United States illegally while Officer Will is dead! <br />

Other Houston area preventable deaths caused by illegal aliens include 14-year-old Shatavia Anderson, Houston Officer Rodney Johnson, Houston Officer Henry Canales, 13-year-old kidnap victim Laura Ayala, Tina Davila - a mom killed while protecting her baby from a carjacker, and waitresses Roxana Capulin and Maria Moreno Rangel. <br />

Why is coddling foreign lawbreakers more important to city officials than public safety for citizens?<br />
