ATLANTA -- Buck Farmer knew it was important to give Georgia Tech's bullpen an afternoon of rest.
"I just wanted to give the bullpen a chance to win two games," he said, "and try to let our bats do what they needed to do."
Farmer threw a five-hitter and Daniel Palka and Jake Davies each hit two-run homers in Georgia Tech's 12-2 victory over Austin Peay in the Atlanta Regional on Sunday.
The Yellow Jackets (42-20) needed to beat Mississippi State on Sunday night and Monday to advance to a super regional.
That's why Farmer (11-3) intended to pitch as long as he could in the oppressive heat in the mid-90s. The right-hander allowed two runs, walked two and struck out nine in his second complete game this season.
"Buck Farmer was very dominant," Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall said. "Maybe the one time I think they had a little rally going and he just shut them down. It was a great performance by him and a great performance by our team."
Georgia Tech led 3-0 in the first on Palka's 12th homer, while Davies' fifth homer came in the Jackets' five-run seventh.
Zane Evans made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly RBI in the third, chasing Zach Toney, who allowed eight hits and five runs with no walks and two strikeouts in 2 1-3 innings.
Toney (6-3) gave up eight hits and five runs with no walks and two strikeouts in 2 1-3 innings. In his last two appearances, Toney earned a save Friday against Georgia Tech and beat Jacksonville State last week in OVC title game.
Austin Peay (34-24) batted .158 in the regional. The Governors were seeking to become the first Ohio Valley Conference team to win at least two games in the NCAA tournament since Morehead State in 1983.
Austin Peay was trailing 12-0 when they scored twice in the eighth.
