GCC to get parking ban proposal

By Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - City officials want to prohibit parking on one side of a short but heavily used street next to one of Gainesville's busiest restaurants.

Gainesville Traffic Engineer Dee Taylor says traffic is sometimes reduced to one lane because of vehicles parked along both curbs of Alpine Street, next to Longstreet Cafe.

In a letter to owners of property near the street, Taylor says the recommendation comes following a Traffic Operations Review of Alpine Street and calls for prohibiting parking on the west side of the street from Oak Tree Drive to just past the Longstreet Cafe driveway

Taylor said the review was the result of a request received about vehicles parking on both sides of the street, "creating some difficulty for through vehicles attempting to get by." Taylor goes on to says that staff from the traffic engineering department visited the site several times and saw for themselves the conditions that had been described to the department.

Taylor says the proposal to ban parking on one side of the street will be presented to the city council June 2.
