Father and son arrested in case of burned body

LAWRENCEVILLE - An 18-year-old and his father have been arrested in connection with the death of a Tucker woman, whose body was found in the trunk of her burned car at a Gwinnett County park earlier this month.

Gwinnett police say Boris Mejia was a friend of Andrea Nassos. Nassos, 18, was found dead in the trunk of her burned car at Lucky Shoals Park on May 20 just after 5:00 a.m. During the course of the death investigation, detectives developed information that lead them to believe Mejia was involved in the murder.

When they went to Mejia's home in Tucker on May 25, he was not there, but they did interview his father Ignacio Mejia, 50.

Gwinnett police said they believe Boris Mejia killed Nassos at her Dekalb County apartment and then attempted to bury her at his father's home. Instead, he wound up putting the young woman's body in the trunk of her car, driving it to Lucky Shoals Park, and then setting fire to the vehicle.

Mejia's father Ignacio Mejia, apparently drove his son to Houston, Texas after the arson.

The elder Mejia was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with tampering with evidence and hindering the apprehension of a criminal.

The Houston Police Department coordinated with the GCPD Homicide Unit and was able to locate Boris Mejia within their jurisdiction. They took him into custody without incident. The investigation in Houston revealed further probable cause to believe that Boris was responsible for the homicide.

The younger Mejia is charged with arson and tampering with evidence in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett County Police Department and Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office have coordinated turning the case over to Dekalb County authoritie, since the homicide actually occurred in Dekalb County. Boris Mejia will be transferred back to Georgia at a future date. Ignacio Mejia remains in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
