Gwinnett Schools confident about civil rights investigation

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County School System officials feel confident that their decision to redistrict more than 500 students for the upcoming school year will withstand a federal civil rights investigation.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has received two complaints from parents of students in the Gwinnett County School System.

The complaints allege that school officials discriminated against low-income and minority students by preventing them from attending a high school in a more affluent area.

Officials with Gwinnett County Schools say a student's ethnicity and family income were not factors in their decision. They say they made the decision based on enrollment history and projections, student transportation data and school locations, among other information.
