MOBILE, Ala. -- The eighth-ranked Brenau University tennis team played its first match in the NAIA National Championship, on Wednesday, edging Vanguard University (Calif.) 5-4 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Alabama.
The Golden Tigers won at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 6 singles and also won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the victory.
Brenau's Kate Mazackova won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while teammate Hannah Thompson won 7-6 (3-0), 7-6 (6-0) at No. 3 singles. Stephanie Moniz also won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Golden Tigers' top team of Lyn See Choo and Hannah Thompson fought to an 8-6 win, while the No. 3 team of Eline Nagels and Stephanie Moniz cruised to an 8-1 win.
Brenau moves on to face No. 1-ranked Fresno Pacific (Calif.) on Thursday.
