INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Piedmont College baseball team has learned of its destination for the NCAA National Tournament, and the Lions will travel to Millington, Tenn., for a six-team Regional that includes two of the nation's top three teams in Christopher Newport and Shenandoah.
The Lions earned their second NCAA berth in the last four seasons with their last trip coming in 2008, a season in which PC was ranked as high as fifth in the nation.
Now ranked 25th, according to the latest collegiate baseball poll, Piedmont will be the third seed in the Millington Regional behind CNU and Shenandoah, and the Lions will face the fourth-seeded Seagulls of Salisbury University at 7 p.m. Wednesday in their tourney opener. The last time PC saw the Seagulls was in the 2008 NCAA Regional when the Lions took down then top-seeded Salisbury 10-6 for their lone win in postseason play.
The Lions earn the tournament berth by virtue of their 30-13 season, including a 29-11 record in the South region during 2011. After winning the Great South Athletic Conference regular season title, Piedmont also took home the GSAC tournament crown with three straight victories including a pair of thrilling come-from-behind victories to cap off a six-game winning streak to end the season.
