Recall meeting targets Lutz, Bell

By B.J. Williams, Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Recall rumors have been rumbling against a couple of Hall County Commissioners since early this year... and now organizers say they are ready to put together a plan for ousting Craig Lutz and possibly Ashley Bell.

Bobby Hulsey, a member of Hall County's Tax Assessor Board, is a volunteer with the recall effort and says Saturday's meeting in Oakwood is the first step toward ousting Lutz. He says at this point organizers are looking for volunteers to gather signatures on a recall petition.

Hulsey said at this time the focus of the group is a recall of Lutz, but he says planners do want to see if support is there to oust Bell, as well. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Curt's Cafeteria on Mundy Mill Road.

Talk of a recall surfaced in January when Lutz, Bell and Commissioner Scott Gibbs engineered the ouster of several key county officials at the first commission meeting for newly-elected Lutz and Gibbs.

Hall County Interim Elections Director Charlotte Sosebee said a couple of people inquired of her office about recall procedures but did not pursue the matter at the time after she explained that state law prohibits the recall of a public official during the first 180 days he or she is in office. Lutz and Gibbs took office the first of the year.
