Later Easter benefits April sales, data shows

By The Associated Press
NEW YORK - Monthly spending figures from MasterCard Inc. show this year's late Easter holiday helped boost clothing and luxury goods sales in April but did nothing for electronics and appliance retailers.

MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse data, due out Wednesday, show that clothing sales rose more than 10 percent compared with April 2010, including a greater than 12 percent rise in men's clothing and 7 percent hike in sales of women's apparel.
SpendingPulse tracks spending across all forms of payments including cash.

Sales of luxury goods rose nearly 10 percent during the month, but sales of electronics and appliances fell almost 2 percent. Overall, online sales climbed 19 percent.

Major retailers will report Thursday on April revenue at their stores open at least a year. Analysts expect merchants collectively will report a more than 8 percent boost, according to Thomson Reuters.
