ATLANTA - National Weather Service officials say they've confirmed that eight tornadoes struck Georgia during an outbreak of deadly storms.

Authorities said in a new report that many of the twisters carved destructive paths several miles long late Wednesday and early Thursday.

They found that one tornado that ripped across Lamar and three other Georgia counties traveled about 30 miles.

Authorities said another killer tornado that crossed Dade and Walker counties had wind speeds of 150 mph.

They also found that a tornado that swept through Spalding and Henry counties was a half-mile wide.

Weather Service officials say their damage assessment report is preliminary, and that more damage surveys are planned for Friday.
