Ga. to offer free math tutoring for 11th-graders

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Education is offering free tutoring to high school juniors who don't pass the math portion of the state's graduation test this year.

The two-week program will be held at 40 high schools across the state June 13-24. The classes will run 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The state is doing away with the high school graduation test, which is required to get a diploma, in favor of tests taken at the end of each course. Educators say end-of-course tests are a better measure of student learning.

Department spokesman Matt Cardoza says the state won't know until May how many students will be eligible to take the tutoring program.

There are several places in northeast Georgia where the tutoring will be available: Hall, Franklin, Gilmer, Barrow, Clarke and Towns Counties.
