WINDER - The Barrow County Builders Association, seeking to jump start the home building in the county, is asking the county commission for some changes to the county building code.
The association is requesting that the minimum square footage be revised for residential construction to allow for 33 percent of houses in a development to have a 1,400-square-foot minimum with the remaining 68 percent subject to the current 1,600-square-foot minimum.
"This addendum should be retroactive," a letter to each commissioner states, "meaning that existing subdivisions with vacant lots must be included in addendum. This is the only way to boost the housing industry in the near future."
The association will be presenting its request in person before the commission Tuesday night.
"We ask that you review the following information in advance,," the letter goes on to say, "so you will be prepared to make an informed vote and so you will be able to ask the Barrow County Builders Association President, Tony Trustee, any questions you may have regarding our request."
The association says one in three jobs in Barrow County had once, before the housing bust, been created by the construction industry, i.e., builders, developers, subcontractors, painters, framers, building material sales, equipment/truck rental and sales, bankers in home mortgages and construction lending, insurance agents involved in home owners insurance or builders risk, restaurants where the workers eat, etc.
