Deal will keep promise to sign Sun. alcohol bill

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Gov. Nathan Deal says he'll keep a promise to sign a bill allowing voters to decide whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales.

But Deal also repeated that if it comes up for a vote in his community, he'll vote against it.

Deal made the remarks to reporters at the state Capitol on Wednesday, the day after the House gave final passage to a Sunday sales bill. (See earlier story.)

The Republican governor said he sees the issue as one of local control.

The Sunday sales bill would allow local governments to ask voters to decide whether to allow the Sunday sales of alcohol in grocery and convenience stores. Georgia is currently one of just three states that ban stores from selling alcohol on Sundays.
