NWS confirms two tornadoes in Gilmer Co. Monday

By The Associated Press
UNDATED - Survey crews from the National Weather Service (NWS), assessing damage Wednesday, say they found fresh evidence that two tornadoes tore across Gilmer County, where an animal shelter was destroyed and more than 100 homes damaged.

Gilmer was the hardest hit area in northeast Georgia.

The weather service has also confirmed that another twister struck southern Bibb County in the Macon area.

A tornado had already been confirmed in Dodge County where one of six people killed in Georgia by the storms died.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the Georgia Power and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation customers who lost their electric power during the storms have their lights on again.

The EMCs say 4,000 of their customers were still without power as of 4:30 a.m., and crews are continuing to work on getting it back.

Spokeswoman Terri Statham says the work has been slowed by the need to remove trees that fell onto roads and to replace broken utility poles.

Georgia Power says about 1,100 customers around Georgia are still without power, mostly in the eastern part of the state.

The Georgia Insurance Commissioner's Office says it will update its figures on storm damage Thursday. The initial report was $32 million not including uninsured losses.
