Ga. House Democrats oppose tax plan

ATLANTA - Democrats in the Georgia House have come out against a tax overhaul bill.

The minority party voted to oppose the legislation at a caucus meeting Tuesday morning.

State Rep. Brian Thomas, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus'' called the bill ``a shell game'' that would raise taxes on the middle class. House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams said the plan relies on three new sales taxes and said such consumption taxes are inherently unpredictable.

The bill unveiled Monday would reduce the personal income tax rate by 25 percent but would cap some itemized deductions. It would place a sales tax on auto repairs and the casual sale of cars, boats and airplanes. It would also create a telecommunications tax.

Republicans say it would help create jobs.
