HCC hosting tax digest meeting

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Board of Commissioners will host a meeting this week of all taxing authorities in Hall County to discuss the 2011 tax digest. Meanwhile, county officials are reminding property owners that Friday is the deadline to file for a tax exemption for the current tax year.

The meeting to discuss the tax digest will be open to the public and is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mulberry Creek Community Center, 4491 JM Turk Road, Flowery Branch.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together the Board of Assessors, Tax Commissioner and county Financial Services to provide information to all Hall County taxing authorities on the 2011 tax digest. New state law requires that all taxpayers be sent an assessment notice yearly. This new requirement likely will lead to many more tax appeals in 2011, which could then lower the taxable values on the digest. In addition to the legislative changes, local governments also face declining values in real estate that continue to impact Hall County property tax revenue.

"During these challenging economic times, we are all struggling to balance our budgets while still striving to provide quality services to the citizens of Hall County. Clear and timely revenue planning information is critical to all of us," said Lisa Johnsa, Hall County Interim Finance Director.

TAX EXEMPTION FILING

Meanwhile, the deadline for tax exemption applications is Friday. . Though applications are accepted year round for tax exemptions, they must be submitted by April 1 to apply to the current tax year.

Property owners must initially apply for these exemptions in order to qualify. More information about exemptions, including an online application for the homestead exemption, is available online.
