Lady Saints softball ranked No. 5 in latest poll

By staff reports
The North Georgia softball team continues to make its presence felt in the latest edition of the NFCA Division II Top 25 poll, coming in at No. 5 in the country. The Lady Saints have now appeared in nation's top 10 for 26 straight weeks.

Angelo State (20-1) garnered nine of the 16 first-place votes this week, finishing four points ahead over new No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville. The Chargers (22-1-1), who moved up from third to second, were the recipients of the other seven first-place votes. Alabama-Huntsville made its jump after going 8-0 last week, including a doubleheader sweep of then No. 2 Valdosta State.

Midwestern State (27-2) moved up to No. 3, while Valdosta dropped to No. 4, and North Georgia rounded out the top five after going 4-2 last week to open Peach Belt Conference action.

While Armstrong Atlantic is currently the only other Peach Belt Conference program in the poll at No. 23, a pair of schools are knocking on the door as Augusta State received 10 votes, and Columbus State tallied seven votes and find themselves on the outside looking in.

Currently at 30-8 overall and 6-2 in Peach Belt Conference play after Tuesday's doubleheader sweep over Georgia College, the Saints are slated to play 12 league games in 14 days as they look to capture the program's third straight Regular Season Championship.

The Saints will open that stretch this weekend with four games in two days, playing host to Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon, followed by UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon.

North Georgia will then hit the road for six straight games, before returning home to close out the conference schedule with a doubleheader against 23rd-ranked Armstrong Atlantic, as Phil Niekro will be on hand to throw out the first pitch at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
