Glenn wins 2nd title of year at bench press meet

By staff reports
BUFORD -- It's a common saying that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Sometimes the old ways for the "old dogs" are enough. Veteran bench-presser, and Georgia IronDawg team member R. Garry Glenn of Oakwood earned his second title of the year when he took the over-50 age category at the Buford BodyPlex Bench Press Meet Sunday. Glenn, who turns 57 on May 15, and who weighed in at 203.2 pounds on Sunday, (lifting in the 220-pound class), was successful on his first two lifts of the day at 280 and 315 pounds before falling shy on his third attempt. Glenn was going for an unequipped (raw) personal meet record (PR) of 340 pounds. He was the oldest lifter in the meet Sunday.

"Let's face it, it's always good to get that (championship) medal, but I'm really disappointed at not getting the 340 in a meet after getting it in the gym in practice," Glenn said. "To quote Chief Dan George, 'Somedays the magic works and some days it doesn't.' The upside is that it leaves you something to shoot for next time."

Glenn and many of the rest of the IronDawgs' Powerlifting and Bench Press Team are training for the American Powerlifting Committee (APC) state meet in Athens on April 9.

Glenn is a six-time National and three-time World Bench Press Champ in various associations' age and weight classes. He's a former Johnson head wrestling and assistant football coach. A Jefferson High alumnus, he also was a junior high wrestling and football coach for the Dragons in the 1970s.
