Scam alert

By Dean Dyer/WRWH
CLEVELAND - Child Safety of White County officials warn of a group posing as representatives of Safe Kids contacting families in Gainesville and Hall County, and possibly other areas, offering a free child ID kit. Phone and in-person solicitations have been reported by the YMCA and others.

Angie Sotelo, Coordinator for Child Safety of White County, says once members of this group get personal information, they individuals are contacting families to try and sell insurance and other services. Sotelo said law enforcement agencies have been contacted about the matter.

Sotelo said Child Safety of White County is not affiliated with Safe Kids but, at times, the two agencies work together and she said Child Safety of White County will not solicit any private citizen door to door or via telephone.

If you believe you have been contacted by the con artists, Sotelo ask that you please contact the appropriate law official for your jurisdiction.
