A rainy, sometimes stormy, day in Georgia

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - The storm system that passed through north Georgia Wednesday left behind downed trees and power lines, damaged homes and flooded roads. But the strongest of the storms tracked across the southern portion of the state where thunderstorm watches and warnings were in effect.

Channel 2 Action News reports that about 20 roads were under water at times in the Rome and Cedartown areas where around 4 inches of rain fell. The downpours were accompanied by strong winds and a wind advisory was in effect part of the day.

Mother Nature still had north Georgia under the gun Friday morning: A flash flood watch was in effect in Franklin, Habersham, Stephens and Rabun counties (but was canceled about noon); a Flood Warning was in place along Big Creek in Forsyth; and wind advsiory was in effect for all of north Georgia. (See separate posting.)

Trees that were toppled by the high winds and/or soggy ground damaged some homes but there were no reports of any widespread damage though there were some flooded areas including a few around Gainesville.

Rainfall at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville as of 5:30 Wednesday afternoon totaled 1.99 inches and reached 2.32 inches before the showers stopped Thursday morning. All the rain pushed the level of Lake Lanier above full pool, 1071, for the first time since last summer. (See separate story.)

Northeast Georgia appears to have escaped an significant damage and problems associated with the rainy weather.
