Piedmont women's basketball set for NCAA tournament

The Piedmont College women's basketball team will take on No. 1 Thomas More College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Lions will travel to Thomas More's campus in Crestview Hills, Ky., for the opening round of the tournament (Thomas More will play host to first and second round games).

Piedmont travels knowing that it placed two players on the Great South Athletic Conference's All-Conference team.

Former Johnson High standout Laura Simmons and East Hall standout Sada Wheeler were both were honored, while five Lady Lions made the grade on the league's All-Academic team.

Now a two-time All-Conference selection, Simmons is putting the finishing touches on the best season in her four years wearing the green and gold for the Piedmont women's basketball program. With close to 900 career points to her name, the forward from Gainesville was the Lady Lions' top scorer in 2010-11, dropping right at 12 points per game, as Simmons notched 300 points for the campaign while also pulling down 131 rebounds. Simmons made her third appearance on the GSAC All-Academic team for carrying at least a 3.25 GPA.

Wheeler made her second straight appearance on the All-Conference list after grabbing 226 rebounds for the Lady Lions and leading the GSAC in double-double performances with 11. Consistently a defensive presence with her 72 blocks on the season (tops in the GSAC), the junior was one of a handful of women's basketball players across NCAA Division III to post a triple double with 28 points, 10 boards and 10 blocks against LaGrange on Jan. 14.
