CORNELIA - Even though the economy is still rocky, the Board of Directors for the Habersham County United Way went out on a limb and set a fundraising goal for 2010-2011 that was $10,000 higher than last year's goal.
Executive Director Bonnie Loffredo said it was a step of faith for the Board.
"Because of the huge needs that we're seeing, [the Board felt] that it would be counterintuitive to lower the goal or keep it the same when the needs are greater," said Loffredo.
At Thursday's annual meeting, the board announced the $540,000 goal had been exceeded by over $7,000. Loffredo says she expects even more donations to come in as the campaign for this year is wrapped up, possibly bringing total donations as high as $560,000.
Loffredo said that the Board did have to extend its campaign this year in order to meet the goal.
"So, we had volunteers meeting with the city of Cornelia [employees] at the same time we were running our annual meeting," noted Loffredo.
Habersham County United Way serves a total of 25 agencies.
