ATLANTA -- Freshman Infielder Katie Bolin (Danielsville) went 6-for-9 from the plate, including a two run homer (the first of her collegiate career), 6 RBIs, four singles and a double to lead the No. 18 Brenau Golden Tigers softball team (4-0) to a 23-0 (5), 14-1 (5) sweep of NCAA III Clark Atlanta yesterday. The Tigers hit a total of seven homers, including six in the first game, and pounded out a total of 37 hits. No less than 14 players had at least one hit on the day.
The offensive onslaught in Game One was featured by Sophomore Taylor Kelley (Toccoa) who hit two home runs, including a 3 run and 2 run shot. She also picked up a single to drive in five runs in the game. Freshman Sally Duggan (Huntsville, AL) had a homer and a single to drive in three runs and Junior Ellen Black (Toccoa) hit a homer and a single, driving in three runs. All Conference pitcher Anna Maness supported her efforts on the mound by going 3-3 from the plate, including a two run home run. Junior Austin Smith hit 3 singles in five trips to the plate and Sophomore Taylor Shrader (Henagar, AL) hit a single and a double. Maness picked up six strikeouts and reliever Jenny Shepard had two. The Tigers played flawless defense in the first game.
Black took the mound for the second game and recorded five strikouts, with Shepard again coming in to relieve and getting one strikeout. Shrader continued her hot hitting with her first collegiate home run, a grand slam blast to drive in four runs. Lana Lazar got in the act, going 2-3 with four RBIs and Jana Bryant picked up a couple of hits.
"Six homeruns in one game is a single game school record and seven total for the doubleheader is also a record," said Coach Devon Thomas. "Everyone hit the ball well, pitching was good and we played solid defense."
Brenau will return to action next weekend at the Shorter Invitational.
