UNDATED - A rash of wrecks occurred in several places around northeast Georgia about daybreak today as temperatures dropped to freezing or just below, turning melted snow on roads and highways into into ice. And, because of the icy roads, Hall County school buses were parked until things improved.
The biggest problems were in Hall and Forsyth counties.
In Hall County, county school buses were pulled off the roads about 7:30 because of the icy conditions. Drivers were told to find a safe place to park their buses until road conditions improved, according to Schools Supt. Will Schofield. Schofield said when the decision was made at 5:00 this morning to go ahead and have classes today there was nothing to indicate that there would be any problems on the roads and that school officials, like most everyone else, were caught off guard when the freeze-over occurred. The buses were back on the road by 8:30.
Dawsonville Highway was shut down westbound about 7:00 at the first bridge over Lake Lanier because of a multi-vehicle pile-up. There was also a rescue that took place after a motorist jumped into the lake to avoid an oncoming tractor-trailer after she got out of her car following a minor accident on the bridge. Thompson Bridge Road at Thompson Bridge was also a problem area; Oak Street at Academy Street; Queen City Parkway at the bridge; Atlanta Highway near Mountain View Road; and Friendship Road at the rock quarry were other trouble spots.
In Forsyth County, a 10-car pile-up was reported at Georgia 306 and Jot 'em Down Road.
