One dead after SUV is hit by State Patrol in Atlanta

By The Associated Press
Police say a 54-year-old Loganville woman has died and three others traveling with her were injured when their sport utility vehicle was struck by a Georgia State Patrol cruiser at an Atlanta intersection.

Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said in an email that the state trooper was traveling westbound on Memorial Drive with lights and siren activated Saturday afternoon when it struck the Ford Expedition. The trooper was trying to assist another trooper, who was attempting to stop a motorcyclist on Interstate 20 who had refused to yield.

Kathy Porter, an SUV passenger, died in the collision. Police said the driver, Jeff Porter, as well as passengers David Porter, 19, of Loganville, and Courtney Ann Williams of Grayson, were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries. All three had been released Saturday night.

Their conditions were not immediately known. The trooper, who has not been identified, was examined at the same hospital and released. He has been placed on administrative leave as state police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Fulton County District Attorney's office investigate.
