By Dean Dyer /WRWH
CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Commissioners has called on retired long time county clerk Jean Welborn  to serve, once again, as interim manager for the county.

Welborn was the county clerk for 18 years, prior to her retirement in March 2009.  A short time after that,  the commission asked her to come back and serve as interim manager prior the current manager, Carol Jackson, being selected for the job.

Jackson announced on  November 28 that she was stepping down to accept the position as  Director of Legislative Affairs for the state Department of Juvenile Justice.

Welborn has served as interim county manager three other times in the past.

She said, "I just feel very honored that the commissioner had the confidence in me to ask me to come back and help for the short period of time it will take for them to do the proper search for a county manager."

The announcement of Welborn's appointment was made Thursday morning following a called meeting of the commissioners.

Commission Chairman Travis Turner said, "We are excited that Jean has graciously accepted (our)request  to serve. She has the heart of White County in mind."

Turner said Welborn will work with County Clerk Shanda Smallwood and other staff to make this a smooth transition.  Welborn will begin work on December 16th.
