Runoffs across Ga. today

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - Runoff elections are being held across Georgia today.

In the Gainesville area, voters are choosing a new state House District 25 representative and a new state Senator from District 50.

Bobby Banks and Emory Dunahoo led the seven-man field on Nov. 8 in the District 25 race. The winner will fill a vacancy created Oct. 1 when James Mills resigned to take seat on the state Board of Pardons and Paroles. The district includes a part of southern Hall County and one City of Gainesville precinct.

The candidates for state Senator from District 50 are Rick Austin and John Wilkinson. The winner will replace Jim Butterworth who resigned when he was named to head the Georgia National Guard. That district includes Habersham and all or parts of several other counties.

Unlike the Nov. 8 General Election, which included scores of referendums on Sunday alcohol sales, today's runoffs are focused mainly on mayoral and city council races. Several Georgia cities, including Savannah and Albany, have mayoral seats up for grabs. There are also a large handful of city council races.

There is an unusual runoff in the northwest Georgia town of Eton. There, voters will go back to the polls on the Sunday alcohol question. On Nov. 8, they were evenly divided, 44-44, on the question. Hence, the need for today's runoff.
