Syrupmakers run over Indians

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter
CAIRO -- Stephens County picked a bad time to have a bad game.

The Indians committed three turnovers and had trouble stopping a potent Cairo offense in a 40-14 loss Friday night in the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

Things got off to a bad start for Stephens County (9-3) which fumbled the opening kickoff and had to start on its own 2-yard line. Cairo stopped the Indians on downs and then took a quick 7-0 lead after a short drive.

Cairo came into the game riding a seven-game win streak and averaging more than 32 points a game in that span.

Stephens County would not get any closer as the Syrupmakers (10-2) took a 33-7 lead into halftime. The only score for the Indians in the first half came on a touchdown pass from Deante Mayfield to Tomas Colbert.

The Indians got the final score of the game on a 2-yard run from Chaz Thornton. The junior finished with 118 yards for the game.

Stephens County coach Travis Noland said they have plenty to look forward too in 2012.

"We didn't play very well tonight but we can take from this what we need to do and where we need to be to compete with the best teams in the state," he said. "We have a young team and we feel very good about the progress we made this year."
