GAINESVILLE - The city of Gainesville has formally filed its reapportionment plans with the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) for approval.
The request was filed late Thursday.
The maps are available for public review and copying at the city manager's office and there is still time for public comment. Details on doing so are in the notice posted below which was released by the city Friday morning.
INFORMATION ON CITY OF GAINESVILLE'S REDISTRICTING FILING WITH USDOJ:
Notice is hereby given that the City of Gainesville, Georgia, has filed a submission under Section 5 of The Voting Rights Act with the Chief, Voting Section, Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice, for review of Home Rule Ordinance No. 2011-02, amending the Charter of the City of Gainesville to reapportion city election districts following publication of the 2010 Census to conform to the "one-person, one-vote" requirements of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A copy of the full submission is available for public inspection and copying at the City Manager's Office, Third Floor of the Administration Building located at 300 Henry Ward Way during regular business hours. Members of racial and language minorities, and any other citizens wishing to comment to the Department of Justice on this submission may do so, in writing, addressed to:
