ATHENS - Police in Clarke County say the Commerce man who was found shot to death over the weekend was an Army soldier who was about to leave the military.
They say 19-year-old Jeremy Sean Buchanan of Commerce was killed after he drove to an apartment complex on the east side of Athens. (See separate story.)
Police said Buchanan was shot Sunday night at the apartments, and died at a hospital early Monday morning.
Witnesses told police they saw Buchanan walk toward the breezeway of an apartment building with at least one other man about 10:45 p.m. Sunday, when a gunshot rang out. Officers found him on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head.
Police said Buchanan was in the process of being discharged from the U.S. Army. Police said they didn't know why he was leaving the military.
