Groups to ask GA Regents to reverse immigration policy

ATLANTA - Opponents of a policy that effectively bans illegal immigrants from Georgia's most competitive state colleges and universities plan to ask the university system to overturn it.

Two young people are set to address a committee of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Tuesday. They plan to argue the law unfairly creates two classes of students and goes against the principles of equality and justice for all.

The board last year adopted the policy that bars any state college or university from admitting illegal immigrants if it has turned away academically qualified applicants in the prior two years. That includes five schools.

A coalition of groups opposing the policy also plans a news conference outside the Regents' meeting to urge that it be rescinded.
