Final report shows Gainesville, Hall Co. school systems failing to make AYP

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - The final AYP determinations were released Wednesday by the state and they show that four Hall County schools failed to make AYP this year, along with two schools in the Gainesville school system.

The Hall County schools are: Lanier Career Academy, Sardis elementary, South Hall Middle School and West Hall middle. Those in the city system are Gainesville Middle School and Wood's Mill.

In addition, both school systems were listed as not making AYP.

APS' FEDERAL STANDING REVOKED

At the same time, Barge announced that the state has revoked the federal standing for more than 40 Atlanta elementary and middle schools named in a massive cheating scandal.

The Georgia Department of Education released data showing that a handful of the schools have lost their status under the federal No Child Left Behind Act dating back to 2001. The majority of the schools had their standing yanked for only 2009.

That means the schools can face sanctions under federal law and may have to return thousands of dollars in federal money for each year they reported inflated test scores.

It's the first time the state has released the federal standing for Atlanta schools since July, when state investigators revealed widespread cheating in nearly half of the district's 100 schools, some dating back to 2001.
