Recycling study begins Saturday

GAINESVILLE - Hall County is making it easier for residents to recycle by offering more options and less sorting at the county's 12 compactor sites starting Nov. 5 as part of a pilot program.

Mixed paper and mixed cardboard are now accepted at all sites. Previously, only newspaper and corrugated cardboard were recyclable, in addition to cans, glass and some plastics. See full details online.

"This added convenience is expected to exponentially increase the amount of recycling in Hall County, which will extend the life of the landfill," said Rick Foote, Natural Resources Coordinator.

Even greater convenience may be on the way, depending on the results of a pilot study of modified single stream recycling at Flowery Branch and Sardis compactor sites. At those two sites, cans, glass, and #1-7 plastics go in the same bin (mixed paper and mixed cardboard each have separate bins, as well). If the pilot is successful, the program could be implemented countywide. Until that time, users at all other sites must continue to separate cans, glass and plastic.

Paint recycling is another new opportunity, available only at the Hall County Landfill. Now residents and businesses can dispose of paint at the landfill without the mess and expense of using a chemical additive.

Paint Recycling at Hall County Landfill
Latex/Oil/Solvent Based (no mixing):
5 Gallon Bucket $25 per container
1 Gallon Can $5 per container
Quart Size $1.25 per container
Pint Size $1 per container
Spray Paint $2 per can
