Toddler found dead identified, autopsy inconclusive

GAINESVILLE - The identity of the Gainesville toddler who was found dead at her babysitter's home yesterday has been released but her cause of death is still undetermined.

Hall County Sheriff's Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said the Dekalb County Medical Examiner's Office received inconclusive results following an autopsy Monday on the body of Roxanna Perez.

Wilbanks said deputies were investigating a disturbance in the 500 block of Mountain Crest Drive around 3:30 Sunday morning when they were approached by a frantic woman from a nearby residence unrelated to the disturbance call. The woman told the officers her child was not breathing.

Deputies and paramedics rushed to the house where they found the girl unconscious and unresponsive. She was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Wilbanks said the mother had arrived at a babysitter's home to pick up the child after working a late shift and discovered her daughter was not breathing.

He said there were no signs of foul play or accident.

Wilbanks said more tests, such as toxicology, are pending by the Dekalb County Medical Examiner's office and may take a considerable amount of time to return.
