Level of Lanier drops below 1060

GAINESVILLE - It's been almost four years since Lake Lanier hit a record low during the drought of 2007 to 2009. And, the lake is inching back in that direction.

As of Monday morning, the level of Lanier was 1059.94, more than 11-feet below full pool of 1071. The record low for Lanier was 1051 and that level was reached in December 2007.

The lake level has been dropping an average of one foot per week this fall. The last time Lanier was at full pool was in May of this year.

Lake Lanier Association Director Joanna Cloud said that once the lake level drops below the 1060 mark, business owners around Lanier begin to feel the pinch.

"It seems like that's where we get into a big cliff effect of the economic impact of the lake really dropping off, in terms of people not wanting to go out on the lake," said Cloud.

The Lake Lanier Association has made an appeal for the Army Corps of Engineers to raise the full pool mark for the lake by two feet, but the Corps has not acted on that request.
