GAINESVILLE - A man who retired Friday after nearly 20 years with the Hall County Sheriff's Office has joined the crowded field of candidates for the department's top job.
Chuck Hewett plans to run for sheriff in the Republican Primary next year. Incumbent Steve Cronic does not plan to run again.
Hewett spent 18 years with the sheriff's office and retired as a lieutenant and Chief of Security at the Hall County Detention Center, according to a Facebook page set up for his candidacy. He also has a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, and he served in the U.S. Army.
