Habersham fugitive arrested in Gainesville

By Ken Stanford, Rob Moore
GAINESVILLE - A fugitive from Habersham County is recovering from dog bites after a police dog helped subdue him during his arrest at a Gainesville motel over the weekend.

26-year-old Chip Parris of Demorest had been on the run since eluding capture following a police chase September 21 in Habersham and White counties.

The chase began that night as a Habersham County sheriff's deputy conducted a routine business check at Hayes Corner convenience store on Highway 17 at Highway 105 west of Clarkesville. (See earlier story.)

When the chase ended, two men jumped from the vehicle and ran. A third man in the car did not run and was arrested.

A two-month-old who was in the car was unharmed and turned over child welfare officials.

Parris was finally located at the Motel 6 on Monroe Drive in Gainesville Saturday night where he was arrested but not before resisting, according to authorities. It was during the attempt to arrest him that the police dog bit him, causing injuries requiring 25 staples to close, according to one officer.
