DAWSONVILLE - The GBI confirms it is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct which have led to the firing of a Dawson County sheriff's deputy.
Spokesman John Bankhead said Wednesday morning the agency was requested to investigate the matter by the Dawson County Sheriff on September 28.
Sheriff Billy Carlisle said Mark Caruana was on duty at the time of the alleged incident at a house he had visited earlier as part of a routine police call. Carlisle would not go into detail about what led to the allegations and Caruana's firing, saying only that it involved "inappropriate sexual contact." Thusfar, no charges have been filed against Caruana.
Carlisle says the officer was fired because he violated a number of departmental rules and regulations including violation of oath of office.
