GAINESVILLE -- The Gainesville girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 51-24 win over visiting West Hall Monday in Region 8B-AAA girls action.
It was a welcome sigh of relief for Gainesville coach Manson Hill, who has been hoping for a return to basics for his squad.
"We didn't play very well against Johnson the other night so we went back to focusing on the things that are Gainesville basketball," Hill said. "We shared the ball better, blocked out, and played good defense. When we do those things, we can be a good team."
The Lady Red Elephants (8-10, 4-3 in Region 8B-AAA) never trailed opening the game with a 7-3 run to grab the lead for good. West Hall would rally to close to within 10-7 by the end of the first quarter but Gainesville would put the game away in the second quarter.
Rebecca Webster and Mikalyn DeFoor combined for nine points in the second quarter as Gainesville used a 16-8 quarter to pull away for a 26-15 halftime lead. They opened the second half with a 6-0 run to blow the game open.
With the region tournament less than three weeks away, Hill said it was time to put a string of wins together.
"We still have some things to correct but I still feel we can make a run (in the tournament)," he said. "Now is a good time to start getting things going."
Webster and DeFoor each finished with 10 points to lead Gainesville. Kate Callahan added six points for the Lady Red Elephants.
West Hall (8-15, 3-7) was paced by Maia Booker with 12 points. The Lady Spartans now have lost four of their last five games.
The Lady Spartans will look to bounce back at Oconee County on Tuesday, while Gainesville will look to keep rolling at home versus Lanier on Tuesday.
