BLAIRSVILLE -- Union County shocked No. 6 Fannin County Friday night using a 20-7 fourth quarter surge to pull off a 44435 win at home in Region 8A-AA action.
Becka Merritt hit nine free-throws in the final 3:27 to help the Lady Panthers (9-8, 3-2 in subregion) overcame a nine-point third quarter defecit. Merritt finished with a team-high 16 points for Union County.
Callie Payne and Catie Tanner added eight points each for the Lady Panthers.
Fannin County (17-1, 6-1) still holds a 1 1/2 game lead over Rabun County in the subregion standings. The Lady Rebels led the entire way through three quarters with leads of 13-12 after one, 20-17 at halftime, and 28-24 after three.
