DOT: Stay off the roads overnight

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation is asking trucking companies and motorists to stay off the roads overnight as slushy snow freezes into dangerous ice.

Department spokesman David Spear said parts of the interstates througout Georgia will be closed throughout the night as crews try to clear ice from roadways and work accidents. Tractor trailers getting stuck in the ice snarled traffic Monday throughout the state, particularly in metro Atlanta.

The traffic jams made it difficult for DOT workers to reach stranded motorists and truckers.

By late afternoon, the Georgia State Patrol had worked at least 84 crashes with 17 injuries since 7 a.m. Monday. By comparison, on Dec. 8 troopers worked 70 crashes with 26 injuries during the same time period.

Ice-covered roads were also blamed for numerous wrecks in other southern states hit by the storm.
