Hall Co. prepares for winter storm

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Hall County officials say they are closely monitoring the weather forecast and preparations have been made for the expected winter storm.

Dangerous driving conditions are expected, and residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel.

"The Sheriff's Office recommends that you...be prepared to stay off the roads Monday and possibly Tuesday," Col. Jeff Strickland said. "Remember that the Sheriff's Office responded to over 100 traffic accidents in a 12-hour period during the last storm that we experienced."

The Road Maintenance Division is prepared with snow plows and spreaders, according to Road Superintendent Jimmy Hightower. Road conditions are available at www.hallcounty.org or by calling 770-531-6824 or 770-531-6825.

County vehicles and equipment have been prepared for conditions.

The Sheriff's Office Uniform Patrol Division has an operational plan in place to insure all critical positions are covered and that its fleet is ready for the inclement weather. Older patrol vehicles have been equipped with snow tires and, as the storm system arrives, officers will exchange their front line cars for a weather-ready vehicle.

All fire engines and ambulances have automatic snow chains, according to Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Central Communications/E-911 has checked all communications tower sites and tested emergency power and fuel levels, Public Safety Director Marty Nix said.

Fire Chief Chief Kimbrell, who is also Emergency Management Director, will activate the Emergency Operations Center, which is a central command center in the Emergency Services Complex where officials from all local agencies can coordinate the winter weather response.
