Rainfall totals topping 2 inches

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - Rainfall totals of more than two inches have been reached in many parts of north Georgia as the showers that began early yesterday continue.

Some forecasters say there may be another inch of rain in places before the rain ends overnight, giving way to sunshine and temperatures in the 70s tomorrow.

Totals for the two days as of noon today today from around northeast Georgia included 1.07 inches at the airport in Gainesville; 2.32 inches in Helen; 1.15 inches in Jefferson; 2.11 inchesin Buford; and, 2.35 in Cornelia. There have been no reports of any major problems associated with the downpours although there have been numerous traffic accidents which are blamed on wet roads. (See below.) In middle Georgia, Macon set a new record for rainfall for the date yesterday.

A Flash Flood Watch was issued for most of Georgia early yesterday and remained in effect well into the night but has now been cancelled for the northern third of the state.

The level of Lake Lanier, which dipped below 1069 last week for the the first time in almost a year, was at 1068.87 at 6:00 this morning. The rains are expected to push it up bit especially as runoff from across the Chattahoochee River Basin flows into the reservoir.

The state climatologist declared a couple of weeks ago that most of the state had returned to drought conditions.

WRECKS

State troopers in Gainesville report "a lot of wrecks" Sunday, many of them attributed to the wet roads.

One crash occurred about 10:00 Sunday night when a car left the road and hit a utility pole on Old Flowery Branch Road. Earlier in the day, about 4:30, a car hit a tree on Browns Bridge Road west of McEver Road that backed up traffic almost to McEver and had some motorists turning around in the road in an effort to backtrack and try to find a way around it.
