Sherrod to speak in Gainesville

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The former USDA executive wrongfully outsted from her job this summer is scheduled to speak in Gainesville next month.

Shirley Sherrod will deliver the keynote address October 9 at the 60th anniversary meeting of the Newtown Florist Club, one of the country's oldest environmental organizations.

Sherrod, who was active in the civil rights movement, was forced to resign in July from her position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture after a conservative blogger posted video excerpts from a speech Sherrod delivered at a Georgia NAACP event that portrayed her as racist. The banquet will be held at the Gainesville Civic Center Oct. 9 at 7:00. It will serve as the culmination of a three-day environmental justice conference that will examine such issues asnoise pollution, community gardens, and educational and governmental partnerships.
