Teen tells Athens police she was raped by cabbie

ATHENS - An 18-year-old woman tells Athens police she was kidnapped and raped Sunday morning by a man she thought was a cab driver.

The victim of the attack told police she got into a van she believed to be a cab sometime after midnight. She gave the cabbie an address but he drove her around town for two hours before stopping the cab and raping her. She said he dropped her off on Milledge Avenue near Baxter Street around 3:00 a.m.

Police said they are not sure if this attack is related to a similar rape last year where a cab driver picked up a young woman, took her to Jackson County and raped her before releasing her.

Also over the weekend, a 30-year-old Athens woman told police she was the victim of a rape. There reportedly is a suspect in that case, but no arrest has been made.
