NEW YORK - The stock market is closing out its first winning week in a month after news on the economy started getting better.
The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 128 points Friday, its fourth straight day of gains. The strong start to September marked a turnaround from a dismal performance in August.
A better report on job creation Friday was the latest piece of good news on the economy and pushed shares higher.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow closed up 128, or 1.2 percent, at 10,448.
The S&P 500 rose 14, or 1.3 percent, to 1,104, while the Nasdaq rose 33, or 1.5 percent, to 2,233.
About three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was 950 million shares.
