Bridge closing for 8 weekends starting Fri.

GAINESVILLE - The bridge on Dawsonville Highway at the Hall-Forsyth county line - Boling Bridge - will be out of commission on at least eight weekends starting Friday because of work on the overhead truss system.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope says the bridge will be completely closed from 8:00 Friday night until 5:00 Monday morning each weekend and that the work should be finished by November 30.

Pope says the overhead truss system has not been refurbished since the bridge was built in 1956, and has been damaged over the years by "bucket trucks, cranes, and dump trucks that have crossed the bridge with their equipment not fully down."

"The bridge will be closed for a maximum of eight weekends for the work. The signed detour will route traffic to SR 369 (Browns Bridge Road) to cross the lake."

Pope says the work had to wait until now and the end of the nesting season for Ospreys, who use the bridge each spring and summer as their home.
