Drugs, stolen gun found near elementary school

By Judd Hickinbotham
DAWSONVILLE - A Dawsonville man has been arrested after drug agents say they found several different types of drugs and a stolen shotgun, all at his home near an elementary school.

65-year-old Walter Monroe was found with marijuana, as well as Xanax and Percocet, at his home on Potleg Drive in Dawsonville, according to Mitchell Posey, Director of the Appalacian Drug Task Force. Posey says Monroe was also charged with distribution of marijuana near a school, since he lived close to Blackburn Elementary School in Lumpkin County.

"The citizens are not going to tolerate anyone doing anything like this so close to a school," Posey added.

The bust happened last Thursday, and Posey said Monday they sent the shotgun back to Pennsylvania, where it was registered, as they try to find the rightful owner.

Referring to the Xanax and Percoset, Posey said "We're finding a greater and greater problem with these type of drugs when they get into the hands of people who don't understand just how powerful they are."
